Patriotism my arse.

With teaching full time and all, I haven’t had time to do serious blogging on my main site, or for HuffPo etc.  I just got an email from HuffPo asking their Canadian bloggers to do something for Canada Day (July 1st):

Dear Huffpost Canada Contributors,

The blog team is reaching out to our most popular bloggers and asking them, “What do you love about Canada?” We’re putting together a series for Canada day and would love a little input from the left rail.

The blogs can be short — just a couple of paragraphs if you prefer, and MAX 500 words. Send them in/post them backstage anytime over the coming week (Thursday evening at the latest) and we will publish them under a Canada Day banner. (Make sure you mark in the head or subject line: “Why I Love Canada.”)

And let us take this opportunity to thank you all for your amazing contributions to our site. It’s a true pleasure to get to edit your work.
Think about what you normally blog about and try and find some patriotism in that (if at all possible!) We just want to showcase a variety of topics and passions!
Thanks again,

I have nothing positive to say.  If I were to write something, it would be very, very negative particularly given the massive funding cuts we’ve experienced lately.  Maybe I SHOULD do a very sarcastic post, focused on a recently released commemorative stamp:

With that piece of shit Selkirk front and centre, the adorable Scottish family behind, and beyond them, a childless Metis couple (who were there before Selkirk arrived).

I love how they try to portray this as respectful, despite the fact that the colonizing white dude is clearly the focus of this stamp, and no mention is made of the brutal repression the Metis endured.  But ohh, there are “ominous clouds” and “troubled times to come!”

Fuck you, Canada.  What I love about you?  Your enduring hypocrisy and continued white washing of our history.
