Do people give you, like a super intense LOOK when they find/figure out you’re native? Because people give me a really weird, nasty look when they find out I’m Jewish. Like they stepped in dog shit or something.
I get all sorts of reactions….from white people. Native people don’t give me much crap usually, because it’s pretty easy to verify whether I’m full of shit or not. If they doubt, they usually won’t say it, they’ll ask around. But settlers will full on give me the ‘you’re full of shit’ look, because I don’t look native.
Although it always makes me laugh when, upon finding out I am, they’ll invent physical features that they would never have coded as ‘native’ before.
Some people tell me that they too are native, because someone in their family a long time ago was something or other.
Mostly I have to explain what “Metis” means, which I usually give up on because to settlers, we can only be about blood quantum.
People from the Prairies don’t act the same way though, because there are more Metis there, it’s not such an alien concept.
But whatever. Not having settlers recognise me as native is basically unimportant.
