That we still don’t call countries by the name the people living there have for their own land?

Why are we still saying Ireland, Japan, Germany, and so on, when these are not their real names?  So I’m speaking in English…and? 

Imagine a map of the world, with the proper names written in.

I’d like to see it.

O.o I always wondered that, too. Especially when the English is nothing like the name in its own language. (Deutschland, Misr, Ellada…)

Yeah, I mean, anglophones are still going to mangle the names, just like they do with every country in the Americas outside Canada and the US, but it’s at least closer.  It’s just that some of the names, like you mentioned, are REALLY different.  Japan?
