Often we are told that native peoples traditionally had ‘hunters and trappers’. Well, the first part is true, but trapping on a wide scale only really happened after Contact. I point this out to highlight the inconsistency with which people not of our cultures talk about our cultures….telling us what is traditional rather than listening to us about what is traditional.
Nonetheless, trapping became and remains an important economic activity among many indigenous peoples. I’m providing a link to a place where I have ordered furs and leather from for various projects to give you a sense of what furs retail for.
In particular, note that a wolverine fur is basically $900. Wolverine fur doesn’t frost up, so it’s awesome for trimming the hood and wrists of a parka. There is no man made substance that can match it.
For some people, often in the North, trapping is the main income for a family. I’m just putting this out there for those who think that this sort of lifestyle is dead and gone.
